April 13, 2023, was said to be a troubling day for individuals alleged to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Reports indicate that what was described as a peaceful demonstration by alleged IPOB members in Asaba, Delta State, reportedly took a dramatic turn when security operatives allegedly dispersed protesters, leading to multiple arrests and concerns over possible human rights violations.
Among those said to have participated in the protest were individuals identified as Mr. Ajeboghouku Omatseye Collins, Obina Chazo, and Tobechuku Azuka. The demonstrators were said to be demanding the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Sources claimed the protest began without incident but allegedly escalated about 45 minutes later when security forces reportedly arrived and moved to disperse the crowd. Several demonstrators were said to have been arrested during the operation.
The Delta State Police Command is reportedly reviewing over 120 cases linked to individuals alleged to have participated in the protest. However, as of press time, the actual number of those injured or detained remained unclear.
Sources close to the demonstrators alleged that Mr. Collins has since gone into hiding over fears of arrest or possible retaliation. “He has been moving from place to place for his safety,” one source claimed.
